Intellectual Property Attorney & Registered Patent Practitioner

John D. Simmons is an intellectual property attorney and registered patent practitioner with a rare combination of legal and technical expertise. He holds a degree in electrical engineering, is a licensed professional engineer, and graduated first in his class — magna cum laude — from Temple University Beasley School of Law.

John focuses his practice on IP counseling and litigation across patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and licensing. He has litigated cases spanning a wide range of technologies — from semiconductors and medical devices to software, internet security, gaming, and industrial systems. His work also includes patent drafting, due diligence, opinion writing, and post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

His technical background runs deep. Before practicing law, John served as a process control engineer and executive manager in the engineering industry. That hands-on experience shapes how he approaches complex IP matters today.

John is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and federal and state courts in Pennsylvania and Delaware. He is also registered to practice before the USPTO.

He has been recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America® and was named a Pennsylvania Rising Star by Thomson Reuters.

Prior to joining Panitch Schwarze, John was an associate and patent agent at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld.
