In late 2025, the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) rolled out DesignVision, a new AI-powered image search tool added to the USPTO’s internal search system. DesignVision is currently available to design patent examiners to help them more efficiently find visually similar prior art during examination. Although Applicants cannot access DesignVision directly, the USPTO will document its use in the application record.

What DesignVision Does

DesignVision allows an examiner to search using images, rather than just keywords or classifications. It compares examiner-uploaded query images against available databases and returns results ranked by image similarity. It also allows examiners to search multiple sources at once through this single interface. The USPTO has indicated that DesignVision can query design patents, registrations, trademarks, and industrial designs from 80+ global registers, including sources such as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

Why This Matters for Applicants

Design patent applications are evaluated based on aesthetic appearance, and, therefore, rise and fall on visual similarity. DesignVision is a significant update to the USPTO’s design examination toolkit and signals that the USPTO is strengthening its ability to identify look-alike designs across a wide range of sources. For applicants, the practical message is straightforward: assume the USPTO’s ability to find visually similar prior art is improving, and plan your pre-filing clearance and prosecution strategy accordingly. Better front-end diligence can prevent spending time and money on filing an application that may end up being rejected over a near-identical reference.
