Date: June 14-16, 2023
Details: Panitch Schwarze counsel Bridget H. Labutta will serve as a representative of the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO) at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications (GIs). The event brings together various industry professionals to discuss issues related to GIs, which are signs used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. Representatives of national administrations, producers of GI products, and GI specialists will be in attendance.
Topics include socio-economic impact of GIs, the way in which intellectual property may be used in branding strategies for commodities, and the management of GIs (e.g., the organization of producer groups, traceability, and control issues relating to the use and protection of GIs). Participants will also share technical insights and information on recent developments in the field.
Labutta practices in the areas of trademark and copyright law. She has nearly twenty years of experience counseling emerging and established companies on how best to acquire, maintain, exploit, and enforce their intellectual property rights in both U.S. and foreign markets. She represents clients in opposition and cancellation proceedings before the USPTO’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and in federal court litigation.
