The Philadelphia intellectual property attorneys of Panitch Schwarze Belisario & Nadel LLP are pleased to announce that Dr. Carly A. Shanahan will speak at the 32nd annual Joint Patent Practice CLE on April 21 in New York. Panitch Schwarze also is a sponsor of the event.
Shanahan will appear as part of a panel focusing on USPTO practice. Her session is entitled “In re Queen’s University at Kingston: Whether to Recognize Patent Agent Privilege.” She will discuss the March 7, 2016 Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) decision that ruled that communications between a patent agent and a client are privileged.
Shanahan is a member of the life sciences practice group at Panitch Schwarze. A registered patent agent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, she focuses her practice on the prosecution of patent applications and assists in due diligence, patentability and freedom to operate analyses in the fields of chemistry, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in chemistry from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Shanahan went on to earn a doctorate in chemistry, with a focus in organic chemistry and chemical biology, from Yale University. Prior to joining Panitch Schwarze, she was a graduate research assistant and teaching fellow at Yale University where she focused her research efforts on the synthesis of cyclic dinucleotide RNAs and the use of these molecules to investigate bacterial second messenger signaling. Shanahan is currently an evening student at Temple University, Beasley School of Law, and is expected to receive her J.D. in 2018.
