An intellectual property attorney dedicated to obtaining and enforcing patent rights, Stephen E. Murray's practice over the last 10+ years has focused on all aspects of strategic patent counselling, the preparation and prosecution of patent applications at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ("USPTO"), and on post-grant review proceedings in front of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board ("PTAB"). Over the years, he has successfully represented both petitioners and patent owners before the PTAB, and handled all aspects of post-grant review proceedings, including oral hearings, depositions, discovery, and briefing. Mr. Murray also has strong litigation experience, having been involved in numerous matters before U.S. District Courts, and before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Mr. Murray's practice also includes strategic patent portfolio development, due diligence, licensing matters and the provision of opinion letters on patent validity and infringement. He manages national and international portfolios for numerous clients. Known for his fastidious and thorough preparation on each representation, Mr. Murray seeks to obtain a thorough understanding of his client's business goals so as to devise IP cutting edge strategies to meet these objectives.
Armed with broad technical knowledge, Mr. Murray has substantial experience in handling matters on behalf of large and small clients in the fields of optics (including lenses, lasers, and imagers), solid state physics (including semiconductor device and manufacturing and computer memory), and software (including user interfaces, video games, and jukeboxes), as well as in other electrical and mechanical-oriented fields.
Mr. Murray's background enables him to handle a broad range of technologies, including in the fields of optics (e.g., lenses, lasers, and imagers), solid state physics (e.g., semiconductor devices and manufacturing and computer memory), and software (e.g., user interfaces, video games, and jukeboxes), as well as in other electrical and mechanical-oriented fields.
Named to U.S. World and Report's "Best Lawyers in America" for patent law, for the last two years, Mr. Murray has also previously been named to the List of Pennsylvania Rising Stars by Thomson Reuters, an honor bestowed on no more than 2.5 % of lawyers in the state.
Mr. Murray is currently the chair of the firm's Intellectual Property Practice Committee, which oversees the firm's practices and procedures related to intellectual property procurement. Mr. Murray also currently serves on the board of directors for the Eastern Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, where he co-chairs the Chamber's technology committee.
Mr. Murray earned his B.S. summa cum laude in physics from Temple University, where he also served as a research assistant investigating the properties of high-temperature superconducting materials. He received the Otto Kurschner for Excellence in Science, given to the member of the graduating class concentrating in biology, biochemistry, geology or physics who attains the highest scholastic average. He received his law degree from the Temple University Beasley School of Law.
