Panitch Schwarze Belisario & Nadel, LLP is committed to making the future of our clients, colleagues, and families the cause of the present. To that end, the firm has taken on several initiatives in recent years to meaningfully minimize its environmental impact, with a particular focus on how our distributed, remote-first model benefits the planet.

In 2017, the firm moved into a smaller office space and introduced a telecommuting plan designed to support attorney flexibility, improve office efficiency, and deliver maximum value to clients. In 2020, full remote work became the norm, and today nearly all of our employees continue to work remotely or on a hybrid schedule. This shift has had a measurable positive effect on our environmental footprint by significantly reducing daily commuting emissions and the energy demands of a fully occupied office. All three of our offices , Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Alexandria, are equipped with natural lighting and automated lighting systems that shut off when no movement is detected, further reducing energy consumption.

The firm has also implemented an office-sharing schedule for attorneys, with shared spaces equipped universal docking stations for seamless flexibility. Because our offices operate on a paperless model, the need for office supplies is minimal and our reliance on efficient technology is high. Electronic signatures, for example, eliminate the need for printing, signing, and scanning, thus reducing both paper waste and associated energy use.

While attorneys remain available for in-person client meetings whenever needed, the firm has long embraced videoconferencing as a preferred alternative for interactions that do not require physical presence. This practice reduces travel-related emissions while maintaining the high standard of client service our clients expect.

Electronics such as monitors and keyboards are recycled responsibly, as are batteries and other hard-to-dispose-of materials. Employees are provided with BPA-free reusable water bottles and access to an in-office water filtration system, reducing single-use plastic waste.

In 2020, the firm significantly strengthened its recycling program through a partnership with TerraCycle, a global leader in recycling hard-to-recycle materials. Specialized TerraCycle bins are available in the office kitchen, and the program extends beyond the workplace as employees are also encouraged to bring in eligible items from home, amplifying the firm’s collective environmental impact.

Our remote-first model is central to this effort, eliminating the majority of daily commute emissions for our workforce. We continue to prioritize videoconferencing over travel, right-size our physical office footprint, and invest in energy-efficient office infrastructure. As we gather better data, the firm aims to identify credible carbon offset opportunities and set meaningful, time-bound targets for emissions reductions, ensuring our sustainability commitments remain as forward-looking as the work we do for our clients.

This is an evolving effort, and we remain committed to transparency and continuous improvement as our strategy matures.
